THE GORY PICTURE OF MATERNAL/CHILD MORTALITY IN NIGERIA
Every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under five years olds and 145 women of childbearing age. And in a statement marking the 2009 Safe Motherhood day last May 26, UNICEF says one pregnant woman dies every 10 minutes in Nigeria. This makes the country the second largest contributor to the underp-five and maternal mortality rate in the world.

About 1 million Nigeria Children die each year before their fifth birthday; this is a shocking 10 per cent global total.

Underneath the statistic lies the pain of human tragedy, for thousands of families who have lost thaeir children. Even more devastating is the knowledge that, according to recent reseasrch, essential interventions reaching women and babbies on time would have been averted most of these deaths.
